Urban safety and environmental management are challenges for any country in the world today. Scientists, researchers, academics from Universities & Institutes of higher learning, governments and societies are working together to find new solutions to these global issues. Recognizing this critical importance, the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, and the International Center for Urban Safety Engineering (ICUS) at Institute of Industrial Science (IIS), The University of Tokyo (UTokyo) are co-organizing this International Symposium on New Technologies for Urban Safety of Mega Cities in Asia (USMCA) during 12–14 December 2018 in Hyderabad, India. The main Symposium is during 12-13 December 2018, and the technical and city tours are on 14 December 2018.


The USMCA at Hyderabad would be its 17th in the series of the USMCA Symposia. The previous 16 USMCA International Symposia were held worldwide in the following Cities:

Symposium Objectives and Themes

The symposium will focus on the following subjects and keywords pertaining to urban safety and environmental management. There will be 4-5 keynote lectures by eminent people from academia, industry and government. The technical discussions during these Sessions are expected to address the following aspects of urban disasters:

Authors are invited to submit a one page abstract through EasyChair online portal available on USMCA2018 website: http://usmca2018.iiit.ac.in/

Authors must use USMCA 2018 format and mention the theme chosen from the list in Symposium Objectives and Themes on the website. Template is available for download.

Accepted papers will be scheduled into one of the two presentation types, namely Oral Presentations and Poster Presentations. Authors are requested to make payment by the due date, to facilitate inclusion of their accepted papers in the Proceedings of the Symposium and scheduling of presentation. Authors can submit either a full paper or an extended abstract. The page limit for full paper is 6 pages and for extended abstract is 2. Technical Tour

A technical tour is planned on 14 December 2018 to casting yard site of the Precast Concrete Girder Segments of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project, one of the largest Metro Railway Projects in India. In addition, visits to few historic sites at Hyderabad are also planned.

Participants can take part in the technical tour by paying tour fees of USD 25 or INR 1750, during registration at the Symposium Venue on 12 December 2018.


About Hyderabad City

Hyderabad, the fifth largest city in India, has its own distinct culture. The city is nearly 400 years old and is noted for its natural beauty, mosques, minarets, bazaars, bridges, hills and lakes; Charminar – the tower with four minarets, an old monument and mosque located in Hyderabad is considered as one of the global icons of its kind. Hyderabad is perched on the top of Deccan Plateau, 1776 feet above the sea level, and sprawls over an area of 250 square miles. Secunderabad, the twin city, is separated from Hyderabad by an artificial lake Hussain Sagar, constructed in 1562 AD.

About IIIT, Hyderabad

International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) was set up as a research university focused on the core areas of Information Technology, such as Computer Science, Electronics and Communications, and their applications in other domains. Institute has undergraduate and postgraduate engineering programs and evolved strong research programs in a host of areas, with computation or IT providing the connecting thread, and with an emphasis on the development of technology and applications, which can be transferred for use to industry and society.

About ICUS, The University of Tokyo

The International Center for Urban Safety Engineering (ICUS) is a research center located at the Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo. The purpose of ICUS is to identify, investigate, and resolve issues towards the realization of sustainable urban systems for the prosperity and safety of society considering challenging socio-economic problems.
